WHAT IS SMOKING?

A smoking means a person has formed an uncontrollable dependence on cigarettes to the point where stopping smoking would cause severe emotional, mental, or physical reactions.
Everyone knows that smoking is harmful and addictive, but few people realize just how risky and addictive it is.
Chances are that about one in three smokers who do not stop will eventually die because of their smoking. Some will die in their 40s, others will die later. On average, they will die 10 to 15 years earlier than they would have died from other causes.
Most smokers want to stop and do indeed try, but only one in three succeeds in stopping permanently before age 60. By this time, much harm may have been done to the body - some of it irreversible.

Those who eventually quit smoking usually try to stop two or three times before they're successful. Only 2.5 percent of smokers successfully quit each year.
The reason why so many people fail to stop is because they are addicted. Being addicted does not mean that you cannot stop - only that it is likely to be difficult. Anyone can succeed if he or she goes about it in the right way. How you stop - and, especially, when you stop - is a very personal matter. Only you know what you have to give up, and how the benefits of smoking can be weighed against the benefits of stopping. Harassment and pressure from others who do not understand is often unhelpful. You will only stop when you have made a firm decision. When you do make up your mind, however, you can succeed, regardless of how addicted you may be.

If you stop smoking before or during middle age (age 35 to 50), you will avoid about 90 percent of the lung cancer risk. If you are currently middle-aged, you are also more likely to succeed in quitting now than when you were younger.

I have read the article you wrote about "What is Smoking".I would like to sent my oppinion about the topic.
Smoking is a habbit of inhaling the smoke of dried tobacco or other leaves from a pipe or a cigarette. Smoking have been practiced for centuries in various communities, often using plants with hallucinogenic or other mood-altering propeties. The modern habit of smoking began in America and spread to Europe in the 16th century. Mass production of cigarette began in the 19th century.

Reseachers have noted an uneqivocal association between smoking and such life-threatening diseases as lung cancer, chronic arthritis, emphysema, and diseases of the arteries and heart. Smoking appears to play a part in other forms of cancer and peptic ulcer, and is responsible for 2 - 2.5 million deaths each year. It is not yet clear what part of the smoke is responsible for promoting disease. Nonsmokers may be affected by environmental smoke, passive smokers are perhaps 3 times more likely to die of the lung cancer then they would be otherwise. Smoking couses both physical and phsychological addiction.

The health hazards resulting from the practice of smoking have generally been recognized by the public. Filter cigarettes and then low-tar and low-nicotine cigarette have gained popular acceptance. Behavioral scientists have devoted much attention to helping people stop smoking. Although many people have succesfully quit, many others have had great difficulty ending the habit. Effort to educate the public have concentrated on presenting negative images of smoking, regulating the advertising of cigarettes, limiting the public spaces in which smoking is permitted, and increasing the cost of cigarette by taxation. Some controversy exist between those who believe smoking is an individual choice and those who believe sociaty has the right to act on its own behalf.
I always believe that sociaty has the right to act on its own behalf because smoking effected the environment. We are in danger when the people around us could'nt quit smoking.

Smoking is one those habits sported by youth in this modern age, in fact it be need ot youth think smoking ostensibly represent adulthood and maturity. In Malaysia, Health Ministry's based on information,24 percent of millions chain smoker among malaysian is youth including low and secondary school student. Those facts say at least less 50 youth trapped a new cigaratte smoker daily in fact formidable. More disquieting when smoking habit be culture in proud among youth up to they no feeling of anxiety to smoking in school grounds. Many factor identified influence student behave smoking at school. They know cigarette smoke can cause heart disesses, bronchitis and lung cancer. But they don't bother abaout that.
They learnt, cigarette smoke contains poisonous chemicals also. The substances can cause a cancer. The lungs of a smoker suffering from a smoking related disease such as emphysema compared to a non-smoker.

  5. I'm sorry for the late respond.Actually I'm agreed with all your opinions. From my view I think smoking is a bad habits specially for the students.

Smoking refers to the inhalation and exhalation of fumes from burning tobacco in cigars, cigarettes and pipes. Historically, smoking as a practice, was followed by natives of the Western Hemisphere, in religious ritual and for medicinal purposes. It has a history starting from the late 1500s.

Smoking is one of the most common forms of recreational drug use. Tobacco smoking is today by far the most popular form of smoking and is practiced by over one billion people in the majority of all human societies.Less common drugs for smoking include cannabis and opium. Most drugs that are smoked are considered to be addictive. Some of the substances are classified as hard narcotics, like heroin and crack cocaine, but the use of these is very limited as they are often not commercially available.

Smoking has proved to pose a threat to male potency. Pipe and cigar smokers are comparatively fortunate lot as compared to cigarette smokers, if they do not inhale. They are not as prone to lung cancer as cigarette smokers.

People start smoking for a variety of different reason. Some think it looks cool. Others start because their family members or friend smoke. Statistics show that about 9 out of 10 tobacco users start before they're 18 years old. Most adult who started smoking in their teens never expected to become addicted. That's why people say it's just so much easier to not start smoking at all.

    Hello...
    Salam...
We are going to discuss our next research question, about "why students smoke?
During our those days, it is hard to saw students smoke, especially among the primary student. Our parents and teachers are very strict about discipline.Nowdays the scenario is totally different. We can see they smoking everywhere, even the young one in a school uniform. It is sad to see them in that kind of behaviour.

So, why it is happened to them. Why they are smoking?

The young one always started something just for fun, to try something new and exciting. They are eager to have the taste of the cigarrete because they wonder why adult smokes. Its looked great and masculin for a man to smoked.(...in children eyes) So, once they tried, its hard to stop. Smoking is not much different with addict. Its getting worst when our young got in group. They encourage each other to smoke, even in public. Sometimes we can see them sharing cigarette. Hanging around in shopping complex and coffee shop with cigarette in hand. They are smoking just for fun...

  8. Smoking frequently associated with evil and negative values such as gangsterism, stubborn attitude, lazy to learn, etc. Usually, if in school, male students are frequently associated with smoking habit. Nevertheless, nowadays quite a number of female students also involved with this bad habit.

Basically, male students smoke because they want to look older, matured and of course masculine. How about the female students? Do they also to be look the same?

Unfortunately, rarely a female student who has involved with this bad habit quit and become good or better. On the other hand, this bad habit has become worse and the number of smoking female students increases drastically. What a shame!

This phenomena of female students involved in smoking will most probably become worse into :
    1. open relationship
    2. peddling their body for sex relationship (normally free)
    3. become stake goods of teenager motorcyclists (mat rempit)

To all female students. There is nothing to be proud of smoking. Why smoking becomes your choice? To show that you are powerful or trying to show that you a powerful? Not all new things can be followed easily. If people commit in suicide, will we want to do so? And of course, not all the fun things are good.

No use for us to be pretentious.. Just take the Malaysian billionaire, Robert Kuok as an example. He is very respected, but does he like to trouble himself? The answer is no. The fact is smokers especially female students gain no respect but ridicule.

Think about who you will marry later? Is it with a man who has yellow teeth, black lips, a smelly mouth, less stamina? If you disgusting in men such this, means you are also disgusting in the eyes of your society if you are smokers.

Our life is only once and only. This is the time to do good things and even the best things especially to ourselves!

  9. Assalamualaikum friends. Yes, I agree with your opinion on topic why students smoke. There various reasons that encourage students to smoke. Beside that, family also plays the important roles on the factors that made students start to smoke.

Family problems such as divorced parent, parent that always quarrel or parents whom are very busy with their work may leave the students without any concern or caring. This will make the students to invalue into bad matters such as smoking just to release their stress. Once you started to smoke, it is very hard to leave it.

  12. Salam,
Here I would like to give my personal opinion about the smoking. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the world. Every year, thousands of people’s are diagnosed with lung cancer that was brought about specifically from smoking.
Most smokers are bombarded with reasons to quit smoking every day, and there are hundreds of quit smoking tips, quit smoking aids and quit smoking support groups. However, none of the ways to quit smoking can work for you if you are not ready to give up your habit. Knowing what cigarette smoking does to you can help you make up your mind to begin your trek toward a healthier life.

Smoking Effects on the Human Body
Toxic ingredients in cigarette smoke travel throughout the body, causing damage in several different ways.
Nicotine reaches the brain within 10 seconds after smoke is inhaled. It has been found in every part of the body and in breast milk.
Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells, preventing affected cells from carrying a full load of oxygen.
Cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) in tobacco smoke damage important genes that control the growth of cells, causing them to grow abnormally or to reproduce too rapidly.
The carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene binds to cells in the airways and major organs of smokers.
Smoking affects the function of the immune system and may increase the risk for respiratory and other infections.
There are several likely ways that cigarette smoke does its damage. One is oxidative stress that mutates DNA, promotes atherosclerosis, and leads to chronic lung injury. Oxidative stress is thought to be the general mechanism behind the aging process, contributing to the development of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and COPD.
The body produces antioxidants to help repair damaged cells. Smokers have lower levels of antioxidants in their blood than do nonsmokers.
Smoking is associated with higher levels of chronic inflammation, another damaging process that may result in oxidative stress.
